Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

Washington University is committed to fostering an environment where diverse perspectives can be shared and debated. However, the legal and social nuances of free speech are often misunderstood or oversimplified in the heat of campus disputes.

The Campus Free Speech Toolkit was envisioned as a “living” extension of the physical text, designed to provide students with five essential analytical tools: legal doctrine, classic theory, social science, academic freedom, and historical context.

To meet this goal, the project required a digital platform that could transform dense academic concepts into an accessible, interactive experience. The primary challenge was to create a repository that felt authoritative yet navigable. This allows users to move seamlessly from classroom theory to practical, real-world case controversies.

The result is an educational hub that serves as a single source of truth for campus discourse. By organizing complex case studies and instructor resources into a unified interface, the platform empowers WashU and higher education communities nationwide to think independently and critically about the limits of expression.

We translated five core intellectual “tools” into a structured digital experience. This allows students to apply theoretical justifications and Supreme Court doctrine directly to current events.

To move beyond static reading, we developed a dedicated “Case Controversies” section. Each module integrates video, additional readings, and discussion prompts to bring real-world disputes into focus.

Recognizing the needs of faculty, we designed a secure area for instructor resources. This provides a streamlined way to access syllabi, lecture slides, and notes, ensuring the toolkit is easily integrated into diverse curricula.
