During MidCamp, a regional Drupal conference in Chicago, I presented a talk on how to land your first software development job. I still recall the anxiety I felt when trying to break into the industry. As a result of my experience interviewing dozens of candidates, I want to share a perspective that can guide others through this difficult process. Although my talk was focused on Drupal, these tactics apply regardless of your chosen technology.

Instead, spend time reflecting on what type of organization interests you. Whether you prefer a small nonprofit or a global agency, narrowing your scope will help you find the right fit.

Because the market is competitive, you should consider broadening your horizons. While you may have a specific career path in mind, applying for related roles can increase your chances of success. For example, throughout my career, I have embraced roles in adjacent areas like business analysis and project management. Experience in these adjacent areas makes you a much stronger candidate. Consequently, it may lead you to opportunities that align perfectly with your long-term goals.

When finding job opportunities, you must look beyond standard job boards like Indeed. First, set up automated alerts on LinkedIn for your specific criteria. After that, expand your search using the following methods:

• Attend Meetups: Join groups focused on technology or specific industries. Not only will you meet recruiters, but you will also connect with peers who know of hidden openings.
• Join Slack Communities: Many tech-focused Slack workspaces include specific #jobs channels.
• Leverage LinkedIn Relationships: Use your network to find inside views of a company’s culture and health.
• Niche Job Boards: Look for boards that focus specifically on your chosen technology.

Overall, the common theme here is developing your network. Since many positions are never publicly posted, knowing people on the inside is often the best way to get your foot in the door.

Getting to a phone screening is where anxiety often goes into overdrive. However, preparation and practice will help you stay calm. To start, research the company thoroughly and prepare a list of specific questions for your interviewer. Asking about core values signals that you have a genuine interest in the role. Furthermore, practicing your answers out loud is essential. You can even have a friend use ChatGPT to generate practice questions for you.

Even with practice, you will eventually face a question you cannot answer. In this situation, do not be afraid to say “I don’t know.” What matters most is following up with the tactics you would use to find the answer. By explaining your research process, you demonstrate your analysis skills and resourcefulness to the hiring manager.

Every career has a beginning. Although breaking into a new industry is difficult, fostering resilience will benefit you throughout your entire journey. In conclusion, if you maintain a positive mindset and expand your network, you will find success in this ever-evolving field.
